What is 5-HTP?
5-Hydroxytrytophan (or 5-HTP) supplement is derived from the West African plant Griffonia Simplicifolia. It’s made from the amino acid L-tryptophan which naturally occurs in protein foods. It is NOT however in the food we eat, although can be introduced as part of your regular supplement scheme to offer a host of benefits.
5-HTP is essential in regulating both serotonin and melatonin levels – our vital hormones for maintaining healthy moods and a good night’s sleep.
The Serotonin Booster
Serotonin (or 5-hydroxytryptamine) is a neurotransmitter derived from the amino acid tryptophan. Supplementation with 5-HTP will maintain your ‘happy hormone’ levels for optimum brain health which will, in turn:
Our lifestyle choices can often lead to erratic or broken sleep patterns, leaving us with less energy to commit to our health and fitness regimes. Taking 5-HTP supplements can help achieve the healthy levels of serotonin required to attain correct melatonin levels in the body which induce restorative REM (Rapid Eye Movement) phases of sleep.
Usually comprising some 5-20% of our sleep cycle, REM (or ‘dream sleep’) is a vital stage of sleep essential for our body to repair and muscles to absolutely relax so that we can feel refreshed and fully rested when we wake the next day. The added bonus of using 5-HTP to help with sleep is that you will get a mood boost too, so no more cranky early mornings!
For Weight Loss
Increased serotonin levels can suppress hunger cravings and therefore reduce appetite making 5-HTP incredibly effective as a dietary aid. Specifically, a number of studies have shown 5-HTP’s potential in decreasing carb cravings which is particularly beneficial to anyone who is looking to lose weight, or is already on a diet. Such health benefits are also useful to those who are training and looking to build muscle.
For Pain Relief & Joint Health
Another therapeutic role of 5-HTP can be to reduce sensations of pain. Research has found that 5-HTP can be particularly effective at reducing symptoms associated with fibromyalgia, a musculoskeletal disorder which is associated with chronic muscle pain, spasms or tightness and decreased energy levels. It is also suggested that 5-HTP can maintain joint health, with early animal studies exploring the effect of 5-HTP on joint damage caused by arthritis and indicating a lessening in disease activity and associated inflammation.
Although 5-HTP is not intended to treat, cure or prevent any disease it is a powerful dietary supplement which should be taken responsibility and should not be taken with certain prescription medicines such as SSRI’s (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors).
