This golden coloured spice is bursting with many evidence based health benefits. However, with many supplement versions on the market what exactly should you be looking for in an effective product?

Widely used as an ingredient in Middle Eastern and Asian cooking, most of us will be familiar with the turmeric plant root as a staple ingredient of curry powder. However, this spice’s goodness goes far beyond adding a flavoursome taste to food, with its yellow plant pigment curcumin offering a host of proven medicinal benefits.

Studies have shown that curcumin can help promote joint health, keep our hearts in tip top condition and maintain our cognitive function. Research has also suggested that, when taken as a supplement, it can keep our immune system working correctly.

Research has shown that curcuminoids (the active ingredient in turmeric) can be absorbed into our body’s cells and tissues as a powerful antioxidant. A critical part of our bodies’ defence system, healing antioxidants rev up our cells’ ability to neutralize the effect of harmful free radicals (molecules generated when your body breaks down food or is exposed to pollution). This, in turn, can help combat the aging process and protect from those free radicals which may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other metabolic diseases.

Curcumin is a natural anti-inflammatory compound. Its bioactive make-up works by fighting inflammation at a molecular level by blocking NF-kB - a molecule which plays a major part in many chronic diseases. Studies have shown that curcumin can match the effectiveness of some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, relieving pain and swelling for those suffering from conditions such as osteo and rheumatoid arthritis.

Curcumin boosts levels of the brain hormone BDNF (many brain disorders such as depression and Alzheimer’s disease have been linked to decreased levels of this hormone). By increasing its uptake, curcumin many be effective at delaying or even reversing such conditions.

The active ingredient in turmeric is also thought to lower cholesterol and improve cardiovascular health. As well as possessing anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties which are both important factors in heart disease, several studies suggest that curcumin can also reduce the risk of heart disease by improving the function of the lining of the blood vessels.

Significantly, the curcumin content of turmeric spice is not very high (around 3% by weight) and so to receive its maximum health benefits it should be taken extract form which contains significant amounts of curcumin.

  • POTENCY –  each daily dosage of turmeric tablet should be 500-1000mg to help your body thrive.
  • NATURAL INGREDIENTS – yes, it may be a given but look for the highest quality supplement which contains the purest form of active ingredient.
  • NO FILLERS – this supplement has grown hugely in popularity and so has its mass production. It pays to look carefully at the specific content of this active ingredient within any turmeric supplement as many cheaper versions offer a false economy as comprise binders or fillers with no actual health benefits.
  • VEGGIE FORMAT – to aid easy digestion the most wholesome turmeric supplements should be vegetarian and if possible non-GMO.
